What is Meningitis?

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

It can affect anyone at any time – but it’s most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults.

Meningitis can be extremely serious if it’s not diagnosed and treated quickly. It cankill within hours by causing life-threatening blood poisoning (septicaemia) and can leave those who survive with life-changing after effects including permanent damage to the brain or nerves.

Who are Meningitis Now?

Meningitis Now are a charity dedicated to saving lives from Meningitis and rebuilding futures for those that have been affected by the disease. They have over 30 years experience in the fight against a disease which affects thousands across the UK each year.

Meningitis Now fund research, raise awareness, campaign for vaccines and support those affected by meningitis. Their vision is simple: for a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need to rebuild their lives.

What do Meningitis Now do?

Prevention is of key importance to Meningitis Now. Over the years they have funded more than £12m of research. They have a ‘Search for a Vaccine’ campaign which has helped introduce four lifesaving vaccines, as well as working with governments in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to make sure meningitis remains high on the health agenda.

But they are also there for when the worst happens. Whether a meningitis survivor, or a family suffering bereavement because of meningitis, they have an army of people ready to support those in need, when they most desperately need it.

Incredibly, they do this without any central government funding, so are supported by fundraising and volunteers. So every pound donated to Meningitis Now really is making a huge difference.

Why are we supporting Meningitis Now?

When one of our much-loved colleagues at Rightmove tragically lost his 8-month son to meningitis back in December 2016, the team at Meningitis Now were a great support to him and his family. In memory of Joshua, and on behalf of our colleague and his family, we’re proud to support Meningitis Now.

As part of the On The Move campaign, our team of over 100 runners are busy pounding the pavements and raising money to prepare for the MK Marathon and raise as much money as they can. Our Ima is to raise £25,000 for Meningitis Now by 6th May, 2019.
